John 19:30 - When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
One of the greatest moments in human history is found right here as Jesus died! This may sound crazy when you first read that sentence. But it’s true! When Jesus spoke the words “It is finished” as He died, at that moment the work of paying for the sins of the world was complete. Jesus lived the perfect, sinless life for me and you. And yet, while being innocent, he allowed Himself to be beaten, bruised, crushed and crucified on a Roman cross for the sins of the world. As the Old Testament sacrificial system teaches, it is the blood that makes atonement for sin (Leviticus 17:11).
Our sins separate us from the intended relationship with God. God’s plan was to reconcile humanity back into fellowship with Himself. Thus, when Jesus’ blood was shed on the cross to the point of death, His sacrifice for us makes atonement and covers our sin; past, present and future. The resurrection of Jesus Christ was the proof that His death indeed guarantees eternal forgiveness for all who believe and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior (John 1:12). We rejoice for what Christ Jesus did for us and we show our gratitude in the life we live for Him by faith.
Self-Reflection: How have you viewed Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for you and what it means for your life?
